Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses: Revolutionary Leap Forward with Display Technology and Record-Breaking Sales

Meta has made headlines at its Connect 2025 conference by unveiling groundbreaking additions to its smart glasses lineup, including the first consumer-ready Ray-Ban glasses with built-in displays.

The Big News: Glasses with Tiny Computer Screens

The brand-new Ray-Ban Display glasses cost $799 and have a small computer screen built into the right lens — appearing just below normal field of vision on the right side. The 600x600 pixel resolution reaches 5,000 nits brightness for outdoor visibility. The glasses come with a Meta Neural Band wristband that reads muscle electrical signals (sEMG), enabling gesture controls: swipe with thumb to skip songs, pinch and twist to change volume, or spell letters on your thigh. The glasses weigh 2.4 ounces; the Neural Band weighs 1.5 ounces with 18-hour battery life. Available September 30, 2025 at physical stores only — Best Buy (October 3), LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, Ray-Ban stores, and Verizon. Expanding to Canada, France, Italy, and UK in early 2026.

The Upgraded Regular Smart Glasses (Gen 2)

Not ready for the screen version? The updated regular Ray-Ban starts at $379. Battery life is now up to 8 hours (double the old version), with 48 additional hours from the charging case. The camera shoots 12-megapixel photos and records 3K videos at up to 60 fps.

Sports Glasses for Active People

New $499 Oakley Meta Vanguard glasses launch in October. Built for action with center-mounted camera, wide camera view, better video stabilization, and 6 hours music or 9 hours mixed use.

The Numbers Are Incredible

More than 2 million pairs sold since late 2023, with 1 million pairs sold in 2024 alone (versus 300,000 for the previous generation in the same timeframe). Sales revenue more than tripled in H1 2025. In 60% of Ray-Ban stores across Europe, smart glasses are the number one best-seller. Production target: over 10 million pairs per year by 2026.

What Can These Glasses Actually Do?

Text messages from WhatsApp, Instagram, and SMS appear in vision; respond via Neural Band gestures. Video calls show the other person’s face in the display. Navigation shows a clear map updating as you move. Photography shows a viewfinder so you know exactly what the camera captures. Entertainment: watch Instagram Reels with stereo sound while staying aware of surroundings. Language: real-time translation and object recognition for travelers.

The Competition

Samsung is reportedly working on smart glasses with Google’s AI. Apple is exploring smart glasses for 2027. Over 9 new companies launched competing glasses in early 2025. Chinese companies are making cheaper alternatives.

The Bottom Line

Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses have gone from a cool gadget to a mainstream product in two years. The new Display version represents a significant step, bringing us closer to a future where glasses show information and respond to gestures. Unlike Google Glass, these succeed by focusing on practical, everyday functionality with a design that looks and feels like regular glasses.
